The Chapelle Saint Gildas at Bieuzy
Nestled beneath a huge granite rock on the banks of the Blavet River, Saint-Gildas Chapel is one of the most unusual heritage sites in Brittany.
According to local tradition, Saint Gildas, a monk from Britain, lived here as a hermit in the 6th century. The chapel itself is much later: the oldest parts date from the 15th century, while the building was modified and enlarged in the 19th century.
The chapel is particularly remarkable because it is semi-troglodytic: part of the building is sheltered by the natural rock. Inside, the simple atmosphere and granite walls reflect the ancient spiritual character of the site.
Outside, visitors can discover the “Pulpit of Saint Gildas”, a natural rock from which, according to tradition, the saint preached to the local population. Another curiosity is the famous “ringing stone”, a stone that produces a metallic sound when struck with a small rock. Legend says that Saint Gildas used it to call the faithful to prayer.
